Paris im Jahre 1869. Auf Geheiß Napoleons III werden die alten Häuser in Paris abgerissen, um eine neue, moderne Stadt entstehen zu lassen. Während die Menschen ihre Häuser verlassen, weigert sich Rose Bazelet ihr Haus in der Rue Childebert aufzugeben und bleibt. In dem Versuch ihre zunehmende Einsamkeit zu überwinden, schreibt sie Briefe an ihren verstorbenen Mann, die ein Geheimnis offenbaren, welches das Haus birgt.
