Thirty years after the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Communist regimes, this anthology enquires into the development and current state of Europe’s East-West division. The dominant narrative of the fall of the Berlin Wall suggests that the revolutions from 1989 have reunited Europe’s Western and Eastern parts. Challenging this narrative, more than thirty authors with a background in either the historical, political or cultural sciences discuss alternative trends of overcoming, transforming and reproducing this divide. In the light of the recent economic and political crises in the European Union, some authors see indications of a reemerging East-West divide and of old stereotypes being reinforced. Others point out that the communist-liberal binary has been resolved and the East-West polarization has lost its relevance. Instead, it has transformed into a new divide between liberal and ‘illiberal’ democracies in both East and West. On a more optimistic note, some revive the mobilizing power of 1989 as a symbol for defending democratic values, both in Eastern Europe and beyond.
